King Ludwig I and His Redesign
King Ludwig I’s redesign of the coat of arms in 1806 appears to be the last major redesign, as it contains 4 quarters with an inset shield. These are as follows:
-
Pfälzischer Löwe - Gold lion on black background. One of the oldest symbols and remains to this day.
-
Fränkischer Rechen - Zig-zag with red on top and white on bottom. This is taken from the Bishop of Würzburg with the 3 points representing the Holy Trinity. This remains to this day.
-
Markgrafschaft Burgau - Diagonal stripes with a single vertical line through them. This represents Schwaben, but is no longer used; instead, 3 lions now represent Schwaben.
-
Veldenzer Blauer Löwe - A blue lion for the region around Veldenz. This ends up getting replaced by a very similar image, that of a blue panther (lion/horse/dragon creature), although this panther is from Ortenburg-Kraiburg and represents all of Niederbayern.
The inset shield contains:
-
Bayerischer Weiß-Blau - This, of course, represents all of Bayern.
